How old is too old for trick-or-treating?
Nancy Davis works in the features department at The State newspaper. She has three young daughters. Our biweekly Help Nancy question gives you a chance to offer advice to her and other parents facing similar issues. This week’s question comes from a coworker:
Help! My kids are 10 and 11 years old and plan to dress up for Halloween and go trick-or-treating.
One more year of door-to-door fun can’t hurt, but I think their trick-or-treating years are coming to an end.
How old is too old to trick-or-treat? Did you tell your kids when to stop or did they decide on their own?
- We’ll publish selected comments in Tuesday’s Life&Style section.

I think once they hit the teen years, it’s time to throw in the costume.
So 12 would be the last hoorah.
My kids stopped trick-or-treating but to make it easier we gave them candy to give out while walking around or if you would like let them give the candy out at a trunk-or-treat at church and like christmas it is better to give then recieve.
A lot of kids suddenly think trick-or-treating is uncool once they hit middle school, so the problem solves itself. Others have second thoughts a few years later and you have 15-year-olds wanting to dress up. The solution there is to have them agree to chaperone some younger siblings/neighbors.
I’m 48 and still go because I’m short and look real young. Helps fill the candy jar for the next five poker nights at the house plus I meet a lot of real cute young men that way.
