A broken coffee cup is filled with memories
We have big travel plans for 2010. Well, not international level but busy domestic travel. We’ll take trips to celebrate the marriage of our niece in Chicago this summer, our 10th wedding anniversary and perhaps my mom’s 75th birthday. With those plans comes the anxiety, the excitement, the planning/organizing and, of course, shopping for the broken coffee cup. . . . What was that?
We took a road trip to Blowing Rock, N.C., for the annual Winterfest last year. (Note: Wish we would’ve gone this year. I heard it was snowy!) We had a great time enjoying the sights and sounds of winter there. As we visited different stores, we came upon a gift shop. Our then 2 year old found a ceramic coffee mug that was just at his grabbing height. Being 2 years old, in about five seconds something else grabbed his attention, and the mug dropped to the ground, breaking the handle. It was a clean break. Still, “uh oh” and then a hushed silence filled the store (parents of toddlers know this feeling all too well).
Yes, we bought the mug, and yes, I thought about pitching it in the nearest trash receptacle. But I didn’t. I brought it home and used a heavy adhesive to secure the handle. I pulled it down this morning to fill up with my coffee. It has become one of my favorite cups. It has a great size and shape, and the scripted Blowing Rock, North Carolina, along the side reminds me of our trip. There are more memories in the rough edge where the handle broke at the hands of my son. This cup was the only “thing” I brought back from our trip, and it was a bit unexpected to say the least.
It reminded me of all the “souvenirs” we bring back from our travels and the memories they spark. Whether it was purchased or unexpected, do you have a favorite find?
