The Gamecocks are having trouble doing anything right at this point.

All Jarrett Burns had to do just now, as a Spencer Lanning punt dribbled towards the goal-line, was to reach down and flick the ball backward for one of his teammates to down. Instead Burns tried to pounce on it, and landed squarely on the end zone line. Easy touchback call.

This came one play after Stephen Garcia throw a third-down pass into the ground, rather than at a wide-open Jason Barnes. Maybe the ball’s too wet, I don’t know.

The rain had been stopped here for awhile, but it picked back up just now. You might hear some people blame the three Gamecock fumbles on the wet field and ball. Then again, Tennessee is playing with the same conditions and has only fumbled once (recovering it when the ball squirted away from USC.)

The only good news for USC is that it once again drove into Tennessee territory. Not far, just past the 50, but it has still yet to punt from its own territory. If it had been punting from its own territory rather than fumbling it away, we’d still have a close game.
