Internet reports: Auburn interested in Spurrier

Here we go again: Steve Spurrier is a candidate for (INSERT LATEST SEC SCHOOL WITH JOB VACANCY HERE).

A couple of years ago Alabama made a run at Spurrier, prompting USC officials to give the HBC a raise and add a year to his contract.

Now, it’s Auburn that is interested in bringing Spurrier to the Plains, according to a couple of Internet reports, including this one from bleacherreport.com.

The story cites an unidentified source who claims Spurrier interviewed with Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs late last week. None of the traditional media outlets in Alabama has reported anything about Spurrier.

Sources close to Spurrier questioned the accuracy of the reports, saying they doubted Spurrier has had any serious conversations with Auburn officials. Could Auburn have had an intermediary call Spurrier to gauge his interest?

Sure. But I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

Spurrier will turn 64 in April, and I just don’t see him going somewhere and starting over. The Gamecocks didn’t take a big step forward this season, but they are playing in a New Year’s Day bowl game and have put together a recruiting class currently ranked eighth nationally by Rivals.com.

This is what Spurrier said in November when I asked him if he had any interest in the Tennessee opening:

“I’m at my last gig right here. And we’ve got a pretty good team if we can get a little offense going.”

This is what his wife, Jerri, said a few days later after collegefootballtalk.com, citing sources, reported it was hearing “increasing chatter” that Spurrier would retire:

“We came here for a reason,” she said, “and we’re not leaving until it’s done.”

More SEC coaching news: Multiple outlets are reporting Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen will be announced as Mississippi State’s new coach.

USC defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, who was on Sly Croom’s Miss. State staff for four years, tried to get in the mix in Starkville. But after watching Croom’s offense sputter for five years, the folks in Starkville wanted an offensive-minded head coach.

Coach Spurrier is the only coach since I’ve been a Gamecock fan since the early 70’s who after 4 years has not had a losing season. I hope he stays our coach for a long time.

hey chicken 31 you must have gotten your degree from clemsam. I noticed you were leaving a reply at 3AM. kinda scares normal fans. while you’re laying awake at 3AM don’t forget we remember the pre-season talk about clemsam winning the tough acc and the national championship. tigs have a history too of fading afer a loss (usually to wake) I suggest clemsan schedule the gators before playing carolina each season. afterall that was your excuse for falling to the bottom after alabama clobbered you. keep your night job.
