LeCorn healing, not beefing up

Dion LeCorn has always been a little on the stocky side for a receiver.

That comes in handy when LeCorn is blocking downfield, which he does as well or better than any of the Gamecocks’ receivers. But there’s a thin line between being a muscular, possession receiver and being one who is easily covered.

Steve Spurrier sounded relieved Thursday when describing how he bumped into LeCorn this week and noticed the 5-11, 220-pounder had not bulked up during his recovery from a broken leg.

It sounds like LeCorn’s waist size is being monitored as closely as his left leg.

“He’s doing fine. His weight’s down, which is wonderful,” Spurrier said. “I saw him in the weight room two days ago. He kept his weight down, and he’s moving around and he’s right on schedule.”

LeCorn broke his left fibula during the final play of the spring game in April when he was – what else? – sealing a downfield block on Jarvis Giles’ touchdown run. He was expected to be out six to eight weeks, and Spurrier said LeCorn could be back running by mid-June.

LeCorn is an important piece to the Gamecocks’ offensive puzzle. Besides his blocking acumen, the Florida native is a proven receiver: His 41 receptions are more than any of the Gamecocks’ returning receivers other than Moe Brown’s 52.

Moved to the secondary midway through last season, LeCorn asked to return to receiver during the offseason and had a solid spring. He is back where he belongs – and at a good weight, apparently, too.

Well this is what we get for taking a Clemson player.

Though I’ve never done any drugs I should say that I would probably feel different if he was only brought up on possession charges, but in a situation where it would seem he had the intent to sell, I do not want that at my former school.

Kids are going to try things, but to sell…that’s too thug. How about focusing on school and football and making a living doing that instead?
