The case for, and against, Columbia salary cuts
I mentioned briefly in my story yesterday that some City Council members are pushing for an across the board 2.5 percent salary cut for employees, which would save taxpayers $1,250,000 next fiscal year (which begins July 1). The breakdown looks like this:

What the judge says, goes
Columbia is facing a budget deficit of as much as $10 million, mostly because of spending problems. Maybe city officials wouldn’t have this problem if they put former Richland County magistrate judge Mildred McDuffie in charge.

Austin to stay on Columbia's payroll until June 30th
Columbia City Council members voted unanimously Wednesday night to keep former City Manager Charles Austin on the payroll as a consultant through June 30th. The reason, council members said, was so that Austin would be available to answer questions concerning the city's 2007-2008 audit.

Sherlock Holmes and Junk to Jewels
City Council members are having a leadership retreat today and tomorrow at the Sandhill Research and Education Center. The center is run by Clemson University, who donated their facilities to City officials for the retreat.
