Koenning takes a stab at Alabama’s recruiting
Two weeks, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning answered a question of mine by saying he wasn’t going to let his mouth overload his rear end.
Well, it might have happened Monday night.
Koenning has long recruited southern Alabama (see Brandon Maye), and hyped Alabama freshman receiver Julio Jones is from down there (Foley, Ala.).
I asked him a generic question about what he had heard from his connections about Jones, and here was his response:
“Julio? You know what, I actually ran into Julio in the spring recruiting. I said hello to him and said, ‘I guess I’ll be seeing you at the end of August.’ Then he got out and got in his Escalade and drove off. That’s (being) serious. And then I went over and watched (Alabama freshman) Burton Scott at Vigor High School at the track over there, and Burton Scott was running around. He went and got in his Escalade out at track practice and drove off. So I’m familiar with those two guys.â€
Koenning said that in front of six reporters, all with tape recorders going.
About 10 minutes later, he sought me out and asked if we (the media) knew he was kinda kidding around.
It’s one thing to kid around in casual conversation. It’s quite another to make such allegations on the record, knowing it’s likely to hit the Web in a matter of minutes. And it did.
I have no idea whether he’d honestly take back what he said. But here’s thinking he regretted saying it when he did.

I’m not surprised. Alabama has been cheating since the 1920’s, or earlier. It’s all they know. Telling Alabama to quit cheating would be like telling Kenny Stabler to quit drinking and driving. Ain’t gonna happen.
who don’t know that.
When at Florida, Steve Spurrier used to complain that scholarships are worth more at Alabama than other places. This is what he was talking about. I just don’t understand why the rest of the SEC coaches don’t get together and bury Alabama once and for all. Let them get the death penalty they deserve, kick them out of the SEC and bring in a replacement without missing a step.
Well wether or not he was kidding I think Jones and Scott could care less about these snide comments. They have more important stuff to concentrate on.
Those who live in glass houses. . .
Sounds like a worried man to me … typical Clemson.
So, does Jones drive an Escalade or not?
Very unfortunate lapse of thinking before speaking. Coach Vic should know that kidding around is saying something that will make someone smile! This doesn’t do it!!
Don’t think a public apology would be completely out of place here.
Paul,
Besides Adams and Willard who are the other freshmen who are definitely red shirting this year? I know some are still on the fence and could remain there for a couple of weeks even.
Thanks,
Pete

I would not have a problem with his statement if it was true. But, neither
one drives an Escalade. For a coach to spit out lies like that is totally
wrong and he needs to be held accountable
Wonder if Harris got any of that Escalade love. That would piss Koenning off considering that was the one big recruit that Clemson didn’t get this past spring who was between Clemson and Bama.
This guy has no class , and no brains !
Thanks for the help Koenning . It just got personal ! Roll Tide !
Yall are so full of it. Check out this link and tell me where Kenneth Page got that huge wad. Roll Tide!!

And we thought McClain(Offensive Lineman) was just in love with Clemson, now we know. He turned the Escalade for the Mercedes 500 series @ Clemson. Look for a bunch of pissed off “Kuntry Boyz” come Saturday in Atlanta, we needed that!!!! IT’S PERSONAL! ROLL TIDE!!
Clemson I guarantee is just as crooked. No way you pull a five star out of TEXAS and bring him to Clemson, who hasn’t won jack since the early nineties. They can’t even beat a team who just got an offensive coordinator 2 weeks prior to playing them (Auburn). Have fun with your weak conference games because the SEC is going to bring y’all to reality. Roll’ Tide and Go Cocks!
Coaches usually have to worry about players giving the other team something to motivate them . This nut did it himself . Very stupid !
