Hinson a compelling choice as starting pitcher

So it’s down to this for Clemson’s baseball team — a winner-takes-all rubber match with Oklahoma State for a berth in the NCAA tournament super regionals (at this late Sunday night hour, presumably at No. 5 national seed Arizona State).
While the outcome obviously means quite a bit to the team, I can’t help but ponder [...]

Weismann the new first-game starter

This just in early Sunday before Clemson tries to win two games today to stay alive in the NCAA regional.
After planning to use freshman lefty Chris Dwyer (4-5, 5.30) in the 3 p.m. elimination game against Tennessee Tech, the Tigers instead have chosen to go with freshman righty Scott Weismann (2-1, 1.57).
This change could have [...]

Reserve offensive lineman suspended for first two games

Backup offensive lineman Barry Humphries has been suspended for the first two games of the 2009 season after being arrested for DUI on May 2 while driving his moped, the school announced Wednesday.
This is the second such offense for Humphries, a Belton native who was arrested in Georgia for DUI in November 2005.
His suspension doesn’t [...]

Oglesby headed to turn pro in Europe

Sharp-shooting guard Terrence Oglesby informed the coaching staff Tuesday that he intends to forego his final two seasons of eligibility and play overseas.
Oglesby’s dad, Tony, said that Oglesby will travel to Italy on Saturday and begin negotiations with the 15 teams from Italy and Spain that expressed a desire to sign the 6-foot-2 guard.
Oglesby has [...]

A sweet home for Alabama

Got this text message early Monday afternoon from Ian Rapoport, friend and esteemed Alabama beat writer for the Birmingham News:
“We meet again …”
Like many others including myself, Clemson baseball coach Jack Leggett figured the Tigers would draw one of the handful of obvious choices to be the No. 2 seed in its NCAA tournament regional [...]

Baseball team dodges one bullet

We’ll see whether it makes any difference, but Clemson has already gotten an apparent reprieve in the ACC tournament.
Virginia has elected to go with junior lefty Matt Packer (3-4, 3.97) against the Tigers in Thursday’s long-awaited 8 p.m. opener in Durham, N.C.
It had almost been assumed the Cavaliers would throw lefty Danny Hultzen (7-1, 2.28), [...]

Handicapping the ACC tourney field

Because of unexpected space constraints, not sure how much of our ACC baseball tournament preview package made the cut for Wednesday’s print edition, and thus the online edition.
So here it is, with a little window dressing. Today’s edition also included a profile of the once-distant relationship between Clemson assistant Tom Riginos and his son, junior [...]

Sorting through the pitching probables

Because of how this twisted, made-for-TV ACC baseball tournament format set up a year ago, Clemson faced three of the league’s top starters in their three guaranteed games.
This year’s docket doesn’t appear much easier.
Come Thursday’s 8 p.m. opener against sixth-seeded Virginia, the third-seeded and 13th-ranked Tigers may very well draw ACC freshman of the [...]

Better water the Doug Kingsmore Stadium grass

Heading into the weekend, there were a lot of folks with Clemson’s baseball program – not to mention a few college baseball analysts and, well, me, too – who figured the Tigers’ shot at hosting an NCAA regional came down to how they fared relative to Virginia over the next week.
Well, Virginia could always make [...]

N.C. State series big for NCAA hosting hopes

Doesn’t appear our preview story for the baseball series made it online, so figured I’d pass it along here:
CLEMSON – To denote the final regular-season home game, groundskeepers stenciled the word “Clemson” around the outfield grass bordering the infield Tuesday.
Coach Jack Leggett considered it a special touch for the seniors’ send-off from Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Unless, [...]
