Press conference will be Tuesday

South Carolina has called a news conference for Tuesday at 1 p.m., when it will introduce Darrin Horn as its new men’s basketball coach.
It will be held in the McGuire Room in the Colonial Center, according to USC media relations director Steve Fink. The school is not confirming that Horn is the choice, but sources [...]

Horn’s recruit from South Carolina

Darrin Horn apparently is already familiar with at least one area of South Carolina.
While at Western Kentucky this season, Horn signed a recruit from North Augusta High named Bryan Narcisse. The 6-foot-7, 175-pound Narcisse is unrated by rivals.com and scout.com.
So the natural question is whether Narcisse and Horn would want to continue their relationship, [...]

Horn replaces Odom

Meet USC’s next basketball coach: Darrin Horn
Darrin Horn has indeed been picked as the next men’s basketball coach at South Carolina, two sources close to the process confirmed to The State.
Horn has been the leading candidate for some time. He leaves Western Kentucky, his alma mater, four days after the Hilltoppers fell to UCLA in [...]

New coach hired?

It appears South Carolina has a new men’s basketball coach. We’re just awaiting word that it is definitely Darrin Horn from Western Kentucky.
The USC board of trustees has been called for a meeting Tuesday at 11 a.m. Notice was provided about an hour ago, as required by law.
Board chairman Herbert Adams told me that he [...]

Blasts from the past

As a history minor in college, I’ve always thought studying the past was instructive, although not well-paying. So while we await word on Darrin Horn and the South Carolina job, I thought I’d pass along two oldies:
First up, a story on Horn’s hiring at Western Kentucky five years ago, from the school’s official web site.

If [...]

No tooting of the Horn yet

Welcome to the shutdown portion of the saga that is Darrin Horn’s apparently impending hire as South Carolina’s next men’s basketball coach.
Everyone involved in the situation in Columbia and Western Kentucky has gone underground. Maybe because it’s Sunday. Maybe they’re watching Davidson-Kansas. Or maybe there are negotiations going on.
What we definitely know is two things [...]

Selig (not Bud) vs. Hyman

South Carolina’s dalliance with Darrin Horn apparently isn’t sitting too well with the coach’s current boss at Western Kentucky.
WKU athletics director Wood Selig made some pointed comments to several media outlets late Saturday night. Among the most interesting:
- USC athletics director Eric Hyman called and left a message for Selig on his interest in Horn. [...]

Down the stretch we come. (Please?)

Things are awful quiet around here, aren’t they? A little too quiet, eh?
Does this mean something is imminent? And will I keep asking myself questions, like I’m Donald Rumsfeld or something? … Sorry, more than two months of a coaching search can lead a few people to get a bit loopy. But we’re clearly [...]

From the Sweet 16 to Sweet Tea?

So Darrin Horn is now available to talk to South Carolina. But like the last candidate linked to the job, Horn’s current school isn’t going to let him go without a fight.
As we reported in Friday’s editions of The State, the Western Kentucky coach now appears to be the top candidate to replace the [...]

Around the Horn we go

It’s official, silly season on the USC basketball coaching front has begun.
It appears that the apparent front-runner, Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel, is staying in Oklahoma. It hasn’t been confirmed that he turned down an offer from South Carolina, as has been rumored, but the people I’ve talked to are convinced now that Capel-to-USC will not happen. [...]
