Checking in from Raleigh

Raleigh, N.C. – Well folks, I just got back from having lunch at Cloo’s, world-famous for its hot dogs. Ray Tanner used to go there all the time when he played and coached here, so much so that the guy at the counter saw us scribes and wondered if “Ray was coming too.” [...]

Off to Raleigh

The next time this faithfull blogger greets you it’ll be from the press box in Raleigh, N.C. Or maybe my hotel room. In either case, I will greet you.
Just a few quick notes today, so let’s get right to it:
- As expected, redshirt freshman Sam Dyson will be USC’s starting pitcher in Friday’s opener against [...]

More about the regional

A couple more quick tidbits about USC’s upcoming NCAA tournament regional in Raleigh, N.C.:
- The dimensions are big at N.C. State’s Doak Field at Dail Park: 320 down left field, 400 to center, 330 to right, 370 to left-center, 380 to right-center. That’s not great news for a South Carolina team that clearly struggles away [...]

USC to Raleigh passes geography exam

So it’s Raleigh after all. And it appears that was the plan for awhile.
The South Carolina baseball team is headed to N.C. State, instead of Conway, or one of the Florida schools, or to Eric Hyman’s worst nightmare of a western trip. Apparently he had nothing to worry about, because the NCAA selection committee continues [...]

No regional host, reason to worry about a bid?

So, do we need to make hotel reservations in Myrtle Beach? Raleigh? Somewhere in Florida? We’ll find out Monday.
But maybe, just maybe, Ray Tanner was on to something when he kept saying “hopefully” and “if” the USC baseball team gets an NCAA tournament bid.
I still think it’s a longshot that the Gamecocks are kept [...]

Baseball postseason predictions

OK, here we go. When you next hear from this fearless blogger, I will be in cavernous Regions Park, providing blogging delight during the South Carolina baseball team’s run in the SEC tournament.
How long that run will last is the question. Since winning the tournament in 2004, the Gamecocks have had limited success, going 4-6. [...]

Monday morning thoughts

OK, let’s start with the important stuff: my personal life. Specifically, wild reptiles in my backyard that will haunt me in my sleep.
Two years ago, while I was watching television, I was accosted by a snake. Well, it was on my porch, and there was a window separating us, it was only a few feet [...]

Boynton returns

I hope you’ll forgive me for this being my first post in over a week to The Blog That Updates Semi-Regularly. Yours truly just returned from a brief vacation, the details of which are classified, though I will tell you it was one of the following:
1. A four-day sojourn to a Bible camp in the [...]

Staley, Morrow and more

So, APR day is over. Wow, what a whirlwind. Are you as depressed as I am that it’s over and we have to wait another year for the next one? Don’t you think this momentous day quickly is passing National Signing Day – and possibly the SEC championship and the birth of your first child [...]

The Trevor Deloach situation

Assuming Trevor Deloach leaves the South Carolina men’s basketball program – and that seems a safe assumption – the only memories I’ll have will be of him riding a stationary bike or sitting on the bench.
It’s a somewhat surprising turn of events for the shooting guard from Saluda. By no stretch was Deloach supposed to [...]
