The too-early SEC East predictions

Last week an item crossed the wires that probably escaped many people’s attention: Georgia guard Billy Humphrey was kicked off the team after his second DUI arrest. Two thoughts sprang to mind:

1) Dennis Felton kicks players off his team as frequently as Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse go to rehab.

2) Thanks to massive attrition, the SEC Eastern Division is wide open.

A normal transition?

Barring the unforeseen, the dust has setttled on Darrin Horn’s initial takeover of the USC men’s basketball program. We know what next year’s roster will look like. Returning players are in summer school, departing players have chosen their destinations, and the circle of life continues.
Left behind are some hard feelings, and the quesiton of whether [...]

Horn and his early recruiting

Darrin Horn’s first few months on the recruiting trail have yielded plenty of curiousity, but no commitments. That’s not unexpected.
The new South Carolina men’s basketball coach inherited a team whose core was intact, and which, even after two transfers, didn’t have much immediate flexibility. Horn will sink or swim in his first season with the [...]

Just the man for Obama

I was reading the newspapers the other day when I stumbled upon a story about a feller named Barack Obama, who it seems has a job opening. And I might be able to help him with that.
No, I’m not volunteering to be vice president. If asked I will not accept, and if elected I will [...]

And so ends the name search

Ladies, gentlemen, other people and family dogs reading this blog the past week are aware that, along with a revamping of the gogamecocks Web site, I have been hard at work finding a spiffy, new name for my blog.
After an extensive national search, in which I received more than a hundred ideas from readers – [...]

Name this blog, Part II

Good job, everyone. We’ve had a great response and some good suggestions, and I want you to keep them coming.
We’ve still got a couple of days remaining, but for the moment here are some of my favorites:

Name this blog

Faithful readers, as of Thursday, this blog will be no more. Well, not really. Actually, the current boring title of the blog will be replaced by one with – hopefully – a little more flair. The bosses would like it to be related to South Carolina sports.
We’ve thrown a few names around in the office, [...]

How they found out

James Darnell was following Thursday’s draft on the Internet, sitting in his Columbia apartment. His father was with him, as the two prepared to fly home to California for his sister’s high school graduation.
At one point, Darnell thought he was going to be a New York Yankee. The Yankees had the 77th pick, and they [...]

The draft, Part I

Justin Smoak, gone. Reese Havens, gone. Jordan Lyles, gone. James Darnell … you get the point.
They’re gone from the draft board of major league teams, and probably all gone from the board in the USC baseball office than plans out next year’s team. Now we await word on Justin Dalles and others.
As I write this [...]

Comings and goings

So, summer begins. The first day of June brought the end of the South Carolina baseball team’s season and, mercifully, the end of a rather mediocre year for big-time Gamecocks athletics.
I wouldn’t bash Ray Tanner’s baseball team, like some in the blogosphere are doing. Hey, at least Tanner’s boys made the NCAA tournament. Yes, they [...]
