Election fun

Apparently it took the election to produce one of the more amusing Steve Spurrier press conferences of the season.

For whatever reason, the Head Ball Coach wasn’t getting many questions on Tuesday, and the presser was in danger of ending after 15 minutes, about half the normal time. So Rick Henry of WIS asked Spurrier if he would speak to the team about voting.

“Voting? I don’t know how many are registered here,” Spurrier said. “I guess some of them are. But we haven’t really talked about that yet. I will when we meet up maybe at 2 o’clock.”

After a moment, Spurrier decided to divulge his own plans.

“I’m registered out in my neighborhood, so I plan to vote around 6:30 tonight, at Pontiac Elementary School. Anybody else voting there? Nobody else?”

Yours truly then asked whether Spurrier was prepared to wait two hours in line, as I did this morning, and anecdotal evidence indicates is close to the norm.

“Oh, I wish you hadn’t told me that,” Spurrier said, laughing. “What time did you go?”

Nine a.m.

“Oh, you went at the wrong time,” Spurrier said.

Henry, in an admirable attempt to get Spurrier to the polls, let him know that as long as he was in line by 7 p.m., he could vote. Then Roger Olivieri of Gamecock Central asked if Spurrier had to actually WAIT in line, him being Steve Spurrier and all.

“I don’t know, we’ll find out,” Spurrier said, to more laughter.

Later, Joe Person asked if Scottie Spurrier had voted.

“Yeah, he is 21, isn’t he?” Spurrier said.

Um ….

Actually, interest among a few players seems pretty high. Eric Norwood, a native of Georgia, said he took the time to mail in an absentee ballot for Barack Obama.

Even Justin Sorensen, who’s from Canada, is more interested in the U.S. election. (One TV reporter, whom I will not name because he or she does a good job, asked Sorensen if he had voted. “I’m from Canada,” he answered.)

“I mean, I follow (the election) just as much as anybody else down here because it’s so big down here. If I could vote, I probably would have,” he added. “So hopefully I can stay down here and see some of the changes that are brought about by it.”

Of course, Canada DID have a recent election for prime minister. Sorensen didn’t vote in it.

“I’ve been down here, I haven’t followed any of that,” Sorensen said. “Even if I was home I probably wouldn’t have followed any of the elections. It’s not as big as it is down here. I think people in Canada know more about the American election rather than the Canadian one.”

It took me 5 minutes to vote today from the time I got out of my car to the time I voted and got back in my car and left. This was about 12:30 today in Somerset County, NJ. There are never lines out here where I live which is in the most densely populated state in the Union.

Jack that’s awesome. Best story I’ve ever heard. Can you tell it again?

Ughh, Brewer: I just thought it ironic that my wait time was so short given the state I live in. If you read the article, voting times were part of the theme and so I thought I’d add my two cents. Great name by the way! What I like about it is it can either be a male or female name. Judging by your sarcastic wit, I’m guessing you’re female all the way. Have a quality day. Geraldo

Jack, I’ve voted in presidential elections in both IL and SC.
The wait time in IL averaged 5 minutes. In SC it was an hour.
I believe it’s because the precincts there are much larger.

@Jack Sorry for the over the top sarcasm. The election didn’t go well by my books, so I headed over to my favorite blog…only to find out it’s about politics. My apologies. And I had to wait in line for 2 hours while it rained.

    Brewer:
It takes a big man to apologize and I accept yours. I too feel your pain re the election. But my Dad, Sam, taught me the Serenity Prayer as a young lad and so I have been reciting it and hoping for the best. Remember this: things are never as bad as they seem and things are never as good as they appear. As an aside, I truly like the name “Brewer”. The names of my children are Brian, Brooke, & Samantha. Samantha was supposed to be named “Brittany”, but my Mom made my Wife and I an offer ($$$’s) we couldn’t refuse, so she was named after my Dad. But I digress. Let’s hope we beat Arkansas on Sat. Jack

Jack – oh Jack… there are more to it…

    1. Golden Rule – that who has the Gold makes thy rules
    2. Change what you can; Accept what you must and pray for the wisdom to know the difference betwix em.
    3. Do on to others as they do you.
    4. To the victor goes the spoils.

I for one was not pleased by the left turn; however, it will be good to have lots of free stuff.

    Best to you and yours,

    Lil’ Joe
