Muldrow's status

Sam Muldrow is not playing in Friday’s exhibition game. Whether he plays the rest of this semester, unfortunately, remains an open question.

The sophomore center has what coach Darrin Horn on Thursday called “academic issues.” While saying that teammate Mike Holmes – also being held out of the exhibition game for a violation of team rules – was only out a game, Horn declined to give a time frame for Muldrow’s return.

Asked whether this was an eligibility issue, Horn repeated that Muldrow will play when his academic issues are “resolved.”

So for all we know, Muldrow might not return until late December, or he could be out there for the first real game on Nov. 14 against Jacksonville State.

It’s possible that Muldrow has some academics to clear up, and will return quickly. It’s also possible that he’s academically ineligible for the fall semester, as several sources have said going all the way back to June. Former Gamecock Trevor Deloach told me over the summer that Muldrow had told him he was ineligible. But Horn and the team never confirmed it, so I didn’t write it.

As recently as last week, when asked by another reporter what Muldrow’s status was, Horn said the player was “good to go.” It’s unclear what changed since then.

Harry, I have little reason to believe Muldrow and Holmes are worrying about the NBA. Not sure where you’re getting that.

Holmes and Muldrow have as much luck of jumping to the NBA at this point as any of us do winning the jumbo lottery. That is just ludicrous at this time. Geraldo
