South Florida
Some interesting stuff coming out of South Florida, a potential second-round opponent for South Carolina in the Charleston Classic.
A previously unknown web site (at least to me) called FanHouse.com is reporting “numerous” NCAA violations over the past months, that the web site itself claims to have uncovered.
The alleged violations are tied to Terrelle Woody, who was hired last year as the video and conditioning assistant. If it may seem strange that someone would be proficient both at filming video and getting players in shape, you should know that Woody was hired to guarantee the transfer of Gus Gilchrist, a forward who left Maryland.
Gilchrist himself is an interesting case. He originally signed with Virginia Tech, then withdrew after the tragic shootings on that campus. He spent a semester at Maryland before leaving because, he said, he wanted to play sooner. (The ACC was restricting his ability to play right away because of transfer rules involving fellow ACC schools.)
South Florida coach Stan Heath has denied the FanHouse.com allegations. His athletics director declined comment, and the school said it’s investigating.
And meanwhile, South Florida plays Davidson at 7 p.m. in Charleston, with the winner facing the winner of the South Carolina-La Salle game.
