Conference pride

It’s really early – the season’s just over a week old – but here’s an interesting factoid:

The Big East, as I write this at 7:24 p.m., eastern time, on Friday night, is undefeated. So when South Florida takes the floor in a couple hours in the second round of the Charleston Classic,  South Carolina has a chance to hand the big bad Big East its first loss. That is, unless Syracuse gets knocked off by North Carolina first.

Here, as of this writing, are the standings for the six BCS leagues:

Big East ……. 37-0

Big 12 ……… 29-1

ACC ………… 30-3

SEC ………… 22-6

Big 10 …….. 19-7

Pac 10 ……. 19-7

UPDATED: Boston College (ACC) lost to St. Joseph’s and Auburn (SEC) lost to Central Florida.

AND FURTHER UPDATED: Alabama beat USC to the punch, beating Providence right before the Gamecocks went ahead of South Florida. So the SEC has bragging rights for now.

Another conference factoid to keep in mind: If USC does win, it sets up a Sunday game with Miami, meaning the Gamecocks will play three ACC teams during the regular season. (They visit Clemson in two weeks and Boston College on Dec. 30.)

Well the Big East now has a loss. This win makes me feel a little better after going to the women’s soccer game. Go Cocks!

P.S. Great season Lady Gamecocks. Nobody deserved to lose tonight but they made a great play at the end of the game. There was a great crowd on hand to watch a great Carolina team. Can’t wait til next season!
