What Downey is doing
Perhaps the most amazing thing about Devan Downey’s season so far: He hasn’t been named SEC player of the week yet.
I suspect that might change soon.
There’s this too: His 30-point performance against Kentucky actually resulted in his scoring average in SEC games going down.
How ridiculous is the fact Downey is now averaging 31.3 points in league play? Among other major conferences, the next-highest in-league scoring average is 25.6, by Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody.
In all games, Downey’s scoring average (a little over 22 ppg) ranks in the top 10.
A few other notes:
- The record for points scored in SEC games is held by LSU’s Pete Maravich, who had 851 in 1969-70. Through six games, Downey has 188. (Honestly, I wish the SEC listed non-Maravich marks, since dude was just ridiculous.)
- Downey has 447 points this season, with at least 11 games (10 regular-season plus one tournament) left. For purposes of a milestsone, last year LSU’s Marcus Thornton finished with 739, good for 20th all-time in SEC history. Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks had 854, eighth all-time.
- Downey has 140 field goal attempts in SEC games. Once again Maravich set the standard there, with 741.

[...] 15 defenses.14. Devan Downey scored 30 points against Kentucky last night… which actually caused his per-game average in league games to DROP.15. Tennessee’s Derek Dooley still hasn’t signed a memorandum of understanding, much [...]
How well does this team have to finish for Downey to get SEC POY consideration? or NPOY for that matter?
Let’s say Downey carried the team to 9-7 with a couple of wins in tourney and slipped into the Dance, while averaging 28 or so.
I consider that a longshot, but certainly it is in the realm of possibility.
[...] 5. The other side of that Kentucky upset, South Carolina, takes on an improving Georgia five on Saturday. Their focus will be interesting to see and a letdown is possible, as the scene doesn’t get any wilder following an upset than it was in Columbia on Tuesday night. Devan Downey’s coming out party wasn’t a great game for him until a few late clutch hoops were made. In fact, the 30 points he scored on 9 for 29 shooting saw his scoring average in SEC games go down. [...]
