Downey in some context

Through seven SEC games, Devan Downey is averaging 31.6 points. Amazing, right? Well, let’s try and put that in some context.

The next-highest scoring average in league games is 20.4, by Arkansas’ Courtney Fortson. No one else is averaging in the 20s.

Here are the recent SEC-only game scorers since 1991, as compiled by the league office:

1991 – Shaquille O’Neal, LSU ……… 27.8

1992 – Joe Harvell, Miss. …………..  26.3

2009 – Jodie Meeks, UK ……………. 24.9

1992 – Shaquille O’Neal, LSU ………. 24.6

1995 – Ronnie Henderson, LSU ……. 23.1

1992 – Todd Day, Ark. ………………… 23.0

1993 – Allan Houston, Tenn. ………… 22.7

1994 – Billy McCaffrey, Vandy ……… 22.4

Record-wise, you have to go back to Pete Maravich’s basically unattainable record (nearly 40 ppg), set in 1970.  But as you can see Downey has a chance to exceed some pretty big names, even if he slips a bit.

Sure wish we had some complimentary scorers. But he is thrilling to watch with the ball.

The fabulous thing here is… he plays defense darn good to! Don’t forget that!

DD is just an amazing talent! Regardless of what happens to him in his professional career, he needs to be recognized in the same field of greatness as Roche, Owens, Joyce, Winters, Dunleavy, English, McKie, etc. I hate to start a sentence with “for his size…”, but what he gets accomplished on the court is simply mind-boggling. I can only imagine what Devan could do if he was 6′5″. He is very special and a delight to listen to off the court as well. Humble and always giving his teammates kudos. Man I love this guy! But hay, no homo.
